“The results and respondent comments from the 2020 survey, which coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic and the introduction of new regulations for brokers, highlighted that
many of our members were experiencing difficulty with time management, managing their work-life balance and generally remaining resilient in difficult times.
We’ve produced this eBook, Balancing work, life and everything else, as a resource to address these concerns and support our members as they navigate running a business with a work/life balance that allows them to succeed. It’s filled with tips and advice from a range of successful broking business owners from different walks of life, different business sizes and different stages of business growth.
We asked them about the biggest challenges they’ve faced in running a successful broking business, strategies they’ve employed to overcome these challenges and their advice to other brokers facing similar situations. We hope this resource assists you in effectively managing both your business and a balanced lifestyle.” The MFAA team.

“Every good thing in life always starts with one opportunity. And you have to go find it.” Sylvia Curley – Mortgage Advice Bureau (MAB)
Sylvia relocated to Blackwater with her partner Kylie who is an emergency worker on a regional coal mine. After several years of Kylie being a fly-in fly-out mine worker, they have switched roles and Sylvia now does the lion share of travelling to service her clients in Brisbane. Between them, Sylvia and Kylie have four children under 14 and she says the busiest times of the year are school holidays when their family of two becomes a family of six. “School holidays are always a blast at our house,” Sylvia said. “We have really well-rounded kids who aren’t glued to their tech devices and who love to get outside and have barbeques and go out camping and fishing.”
Planning is key
She says coordinating calendars with ex-partners can be tricky, so planning, open communication and flexibility are key to making things work and ensuring she can maximise the time she spends with her 8-year-old twins and Kylie’s two children. “Things don’t always work to your favour,” she said. “It’s hard to run a business, coordinate fly-in fly-out, coordinate four kids and then on top of that – all of the other relationships you’ve got to manage with your BDMs and your mentor – you’ve got to be flexible, and you’ve got to prioritise.”
But one thing broking has given Sylvia is the flexibility to have more time to spend with her children because she is able to set the expectations around her time. “I can still take my son to a soccer game, still cook a meal and I can still be there for my clients when they need me,” she said. Sylvia’s son is autistic, which she says has made her a more adaptable and patient parent.
“My son is amazing and insightful and such a funny little guy,” she said. “Because I empathise with how much harder he finds things, I love watching his face light up as he accomplishes new tasks. I don’t really have advice for other parents out there who are parenting a child with autism, but I will say, I get it. “It’s because of your patience, support and love for your child, they will thrive to their full potential. These children are a gift.”
