Leading with Love is easy to do if you are doing it from the heart. I’m forever grateful for my experiences and was inspired to take this video of this beautiful swan family with the parents gently guiding their 2 cygnets from the lake and onto the grass to feed on the seeds. I love combining exercise with nature and enjoy jogging around Albert Park Lake which has a variety of birds and trees.
In business, leading with your heart is balanced by logic and reason and is a long-term strategy that produces trust, commitment and engagement. When you think about business, what comes to mind? Business models, revenue, profit, human capital, branding, marketing?
While these are all vital components of any successful business, I believe that the most important one is love. Yes, love. It’s possible to have genuine love for your staff and those you lead without sacrificing the goals of your business.
I’m not talking about warm and fuzzy feelings of love, but the kind of love that allows your staff to be imperfectly human, like the kindness of noticing that a staff member is having a bad day or feeling overwhelmed with the pressures of life.
If we are perfectly honest with ourselves as leaders, we will understand that people have real problems in life outside of work, whether financial, marital, familial, legal, etc. It’s a common thread that we all share regardless of what we do for a living. The reality is, sometimes these issues interfere with work.
If people are not handled with care, it can add more stress and pressure to their life and cause morale to decrease and performance to suffer.
Sure, there’s always the concern about striking the right balance between professionalism and being personable or caring. With the right boundaries intact, showing genuine concern or compassion for the people you lead will not diminish your respectability or reputation as a strong leader, but it will instead bring out the best in them while fostering an environment that is conducive to thriving.
There is no business without people, so when people thrive, the business thrives. Showing love is not a license for your team to be incompetent. Instead, it conveys that their job performance is not the only thing that matters to you as a leader. They matter too.
Business is 90% relational and 10% transactional. You are not required to be a therapist, but as a leader, you can show empathy for your staff in a balanced and non-intrusive way. Love always brings out the best in people.
